East Gippsland is one of Victoria’s most remote and heavily forested regions — vast tracts of bush between scattered towns and a long, exposed coast. Hipponics Firewatch plots current fires and warnings from VicEmergency across the region — Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Cann River and Mallacoota — alongside satellite hotspots and live conditions.
Open the live East Gippsland fire map →During the 2019–20 Black Summer, fire cut off the coastal town of Mallacoota — thousands of residents and holidaymakers sheltered on the foreshore under a red sky and were evacuated by sea. Huge areas of East Gippsland forest burned for weeks. Remote terrain, few roads (the Princes Highway is often the only route in or out) and long distances to services mean residents and visitors should plan to leave very early on high fire-danger days, and never wait for a fire to arrive. Hipponics Firewatch is a situational-awareness tool, not a replacement for official warnings.
